In a sentence: Yet another mediocre regression novel.
I’m not sure if it will ever get better, if it does, I’m sure someone in the replies will mention it. However, the single most important part of a story imo is the hook, and this novel simply does not do that well after the initial chapter. The first chapter is a great start, with an MC that is destitute in an unfamiliar land and characters that genuinely seem interesting. Then, the novel flushes that all away with a cheesy “back to school” arc that entirely ruins the characterization that was presented in the first chapter. The author immediately drops the “MC has been alive for thousands of years and can barely remember his family and friends’ faces” idea for a power fantasy perfect memory MC who remembers obscure info like “which teacher has a crush on other teachers” and their exact birth dates.
Add on hyping certain characters up to be the ultimate badass of their time only to make them a bumbling fool when you get to know her, and you have a recipe for a novel that you know will not live up to the initial premise.
