When Li Fan transmigrated into a new world, his life seemed unremarkable. He was moderately well-off, with a wife and children, but nothing extraordinary. Everything changed upon his death, when he awakened the ability Return to Truth: the power to virtualize an entire lifetime’s worth of experiences, run it as a simulation, and return to the age of twenty armed with that knowledge.
With this ability in hand, Li Fan finally saw a chance to pursue the dream he had always harbored: eternal life. In other words, the path of immortal cultivation.
But the world of cultivation was nothing like the paradise he imagined. After countless generations of cultivators plundering heaven and earth, the heavens had struck back. Mortals now carried the Immortal-Mortal Miasma within their blood, a disease that, when encountered by cultivators, led to cultivation decline and death. No technique could be practiced by more than a single person. Calamities descended from the Heavenly Dao without warning.
In such a hostile world, where even the heavens themselves resist immortal cultivation, can Li Fan truly seize eternal life? Or will he meet his final end, his Dao dispersing back to heaven?

Chinese Synopsis:

The path of immortality is arduous beyond measure!

And this cultivation world has been utterly transformed by a plague!

Mortals carry a disease, and should an immortal come into contact with them, the lightest consequence is a decline in cultivation, while the worst is one’s Dao dispersing to the heavens. Thus, immortals and mortals are eternally divided.

The Exclusivity of Immortal Techniques means the entire cultivation world has become a vast, dark forest.

Li Fan transmigrated into this world with ambitions as vast as the heavens, yet he could only struggle in the mortal dust, wasting his entire life.

Fortunately, at the moment of his death, he finally awakened an esoteric gift—one that could transform reality into illusion, turning his real life into a fleeting dream and returning him to the very moment of his transmigration!

And so, Li Fan embarked on the long road to eternal life!

In his second life, Li Fan spent fifty years striving to grasp ultimate power, yet he scoured the world and found no trace of immortals. Only at life's end did he catch a glimpse of immortals.

In his third life, Li Fan exhausted his mind and schemed with every fiber of his being, yet in the end, he could not withstand a single strike from an immortal's sword!

The fourth life...

...

I, Li Fan, am but a mortal. No matter how many lifetimes it takes, I have no regrets. I seek only eternal life!

This is a novel that’s been previously poorly translated, so I’ve read over a hundred chapters. I recommend it as quite an original and engaging story. It was really interesting until that translation got more unintelligible, and there was too much nuance so I had to drop it. This is a mystery novel that builds in layers, uncovering more questions than answers as you go along (up to where I left it). There’s elements of horror (including cosmic) but it’s used to flesh out the setting mainly, unlike a story like The Bizarre Immortal.

The MC is very much a purposefully contradictory character, his cheat being part of the reason why. He’ll be careful then reckless, compassionate then callous, brave then cowardly. In a world that wants to see you dead, his cheat is as much a curse as it is a blessing.

I also read several hundred chapters, but the translation quality was lacking. At a certain point the translation is archived pages of poorly edited mtl. (Edit: To make it clear, there are only 20 translated chapters here. The translation quality I mention is from other sites)

The story is really cool and it just has a lot of layers. Its like a checkpoint system and every time he lives his life he learns more about the world abd the people.

It does feel strange when reading because it's like nothing matters except the main character. But what you get out of it is a really unique story.

Some people might call it too slow but i think the pacing is good for a story that focuses on worldbuilding. This save and reset gimmick also lets the author be more ruthless with the world, since consequences have to be really extreme to matter.

Like who would be scared of dying if you knew you would come back to life? I won't spoil anything but damn that world is ruthless to the extreme.

When I read the synopsis for this one it didn't really interest me, but I found myself with a few hours to kill and the willpower for nothing, so I figured I would give it a read and it hooked me big time. As always, 20 chapters is not enough to give a recommendation for or against and unlike others who have read further into the book other places, I have never heard of this before, but I am very much looking forward to more. From what I have read, I think people will find this one an enjoyable read and pleasant change of pace compared to some of the more traditional books.
